My parent's Argus 35mm camera always fascinated me. I could never get the hang of it – nothing ever seemed to be in focus. And yet, my parents were able to capture definitive portions of my early childhood with that camera.
I remember my first camera only by the fact that it was some type of instamatic camera that used 110 film - all the rage among middle-class suburbanites in the late 70's. I took photos that I thought were great. Some probably were. Most, however, not so much. It wasn’t until many years later that I found a subject that truly resonated with me. On my first trip to the western US, I experienced red earth and blue sky from horizon to horizon.
Over the years, my photography has migrated from an outward, expansive view of the world to an inward, reflective view, which mirrors my own journey through life. |
People have commented on my ability to look at things from a different perspective. I come across a subject by walking around (sometimes aimlessly, sometimes with purpose) until I see or sense something that makes me pause: an interesting composition, contrasting textures, unique shapes, an interplay of light and shadow. Usually, but not always, there is a somber tone associated with what I frame in my view. I refer to this as an "even in the quietest moment" scene. I like the quiet, little moments.
Travel plays a large role in my photography. Travel has enabled me to explore not only the world around me, but, more importantly, it has enabled me to explore myself. I have found a place where I can be myself, where I can see myself. That place is what I refer to as the calming space. A calming space is the place where your thoughts come into focus. Enlightenment and awareness exist here. Wrestling with inner demons does as well. I get to that place through the lens of my camera.
With my photography, I am sharing very intimate details of my life. The world is full of shared connections. My hope is that through these images, I can form such a connection with the viewer. |
